Raytheon's JPS Communications Introduces the NXU-2A

NXU-2A Network eXtension Unit

Raytheon's JPS Communications introduces the NXU-2A, a new device that replaces its legacy NXU-2 Network eXtension Unit.

What is the NXU-2A?
The NXU-2A uses radio over Internet protocol (RoIP) and voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) technology to send and receive digital voice messages.
The NXU-2A is intended for use with radios, radio communication consoles, and other JPS products such as the ACU-1000 Interconnect Unit and the SNV-12 Voter. A key advantage of the NXU-2A is that it creates an extremely low cost, flexible radio communications network all while using existing network infrastructure eliminating the need for leased lines and microwave sites.

What differentiates the NXU-2A from the legacy NXU-2?
The NXU-2A can do everything that the NXU-2 was capable of; the NXU-2A just offers additional features.
The NXU-2A's new features are advantageous to trunking applications, handset users and customers who use multiple NXU-2s. Some of the new features are hardware specific, whereas some features can function with the legacy NXU-2 module depending upon the version of firmware being utilized. The new features included in the NXU-2A are the ability to delay the Transmit and Receive Audio, voice modulation recognition (VMR), support of multicast IP and Quality of Service (QoS), a selectable 20 dB gain boost on the audio input for applications, and a "restore to factory defaults" setting.

New Features:

  • Ability to delay the Transmit and Receive Audio
The NXU-2A's ability to delay the TX and RX audio is ideal for trunking applications where extra delay may be required.
  • VMR (voice modulation recognition)
The new offering of VMR, in addition to the already present hardware COR and VOX capabilities, allows a different option for determining when the squelch on a radio is active.
  • WAIS™ compatible
    Compatible with JPS WAIS™ software.
  • Multicast IP
The NXU-2A's added feature of supporting multicast IP is beneficial because it reduces the amount of network traffic, ensuring that each unit in the multicast group will receive communications. This is ideal for the applications in which multiple NXU's are in use.
  • Quality of Service (QoS) through DSCP settings
QoS support allows for a level of priority to be assigned for RoIP data over other types of data. In the event that a network becomes over-utilized, the NXU data will be given a priority allowing a voice transmission to go through first.
  • New 10/100 BasetT network interface
This allows 100 Mbps operation as well as the 10 Mbps rate previously offered.
  • Selectable 20 dB gain boost on the audio input
The additional gain boost of +20dB allows an enhancement of received audio to compensate for devices with very low drive levels. This is particularly ideal for handsets and is a response to various customer requirements.
  • New "reset to factory defaults" setting
The NXU-2A parameters can be reset to well-defined factory default state by implementing a reset-button at the rear of the unit. This is especially useful if the IP address on the unit is forgotten or unknown.
